Formed in November 2008, the Chemical Valley Roller Girls are Charleston, West Virginia’s first, competitive, all female flat track roller derby league. In 2013, Chemical Valley became the first league in West Virginia to become WFTDA apprentices and one year later became full fledged members. A small league, Chemical Valley has grown from being the underdogs to the league to watch.

SKATER OF THE MONTH!
Since December is CVRG's off month, we are going to go ahead and grace the lovely Cait with a our Skater of the Month for January. Meet Artoo, our soon to be college graduate dynamo!
What is your position?
I'll take whatever I can get but I usually end up jamming because that's where I started and I'm small. I love blocking though, sometimes I can really surprise people with some big hits because I'm smaller but I spend a lot of time practicing technique.
How long have you played?
Four years in February with Jewel City Roller Girls in Huntington and this past year with Chemical Valley as well. Two practices a week just wasn't enough ;)
What is Artoo like outside of Derby?
I am a student at Marshall University studying history, though by the time this is posted I will have graduated! My hobbies include knitting, crocheting, reading, and looking at pictures of cats on the internet.
Best derby moment?
This whole past season was a whirlwind of awesome. I was skating for two leagues and weightlifting and I feel like my game improved exponentially. I got several MVP Jammer awards with Chemical Valley, my first MVP Jammer with Jewel City since my first season, and Gem City Juniors chose me as their favorite skater when I subbed in with the Appalachian Hell Betties - for a bout where I blocked the whole time! That was a first for me.
Any embarassing moments?
Jewel City had this intro for a while where we skated clockwise on the track, got introduced and peeled off from the line, turned around and skated counterclockwise back to the back of the line (if you can picture that.) Well, maybe we were nervous, but me and B. Battery skated directly into each other during intros once. Like, completely laid each other out. We told everyone it was a trick so the other team would underestimate us...
What are your goals?
Cross-train more, get more jammer tricks, watch more derby, and start training others!
Any Pre-bout rituals?
Other than normal stuff like cleaning my wheels, I like to listen to the National Anthem about an hour before we play. They always play it right before we play when I'm really nervous so now I have this weird Pavlovian response where the National Anthem makes me really nervous, so I try to listen to it and get my pre-bout jitters out early! Also, pep talks from my derby wife Rat Race
What was your best bout?
Chemical Valley's game against Charlotte's B-Team this past season was really solid. It was the first double header I did since I started playing for two leagues so I was really nervous about it, and Jewel City had the first bout which was especially hard hitting. I felt like I learned my limits with that bout, and they are way past where I thought they would be!
What advice would you give to someone thinking about trying out roller derby or who is new to roller derby?
Do things that scare you! That is my best advice for anyone all of the time. Move toward what scares you, it's a sign that you can learn and grow from it. I wasn't a sports person, I was about 100lbs when I started and people joked about what a weeny I was all the time. I was terrified but I'm so glad I just tried it anyway!
