What I'd Tell New Skaters:
A little over a year.
Busy. I have been working in healthcare for 13 years. I have been an RN for 7 of those 13 years. Work keeps me crazy busy most of the time. I have been with my husband since 2004, married since 2007. We have 2 cats (Fatty & Tiny) & a bulldog (Sookie). In my spare time I love to spend time with friends/family, be outdoors (hike, kayak, camp), shoot guns, play music, read, help out with charity events, & travel.
My first jam for a real bout!
My first jam for a real bout. LOL!
To be the best derby player I can be.
Spend time with my teammates. And eat!
My belt buckle my teammates gave me for my birthday. I freaking love it! My derby hero is Jackie Daniels. She always wears a belt buckle & jean shorts when she plays. I like to think it helps me channel her awesomeness. :)
It wasn't a bout, but a scrimmage. Our team scrimmaged each other in Montgomery, WV last year. I had so much fun playing against some of my teammates.
The after party after the scrimmage. Dress up Halloween party at a teammates house.
Knock on wood, I personally have not seen/obtained a really insane injury. I do have a bum knee, but it's nothing I can't overcome.
If you're thinking about doing it, do it. If you are new to roller derby, keep doing it & don't give up. Derby is difficult & frustrating at times. There is ALWAYS more to learn or improve on. Derby is also very time consuming. You really have to be committed to it. I treat derby like a job on the accountability level. It's great exercise, great self confidence builder, great way to make new awesome friends, and just... great!
