What I'd Tell New Skaters:
Blocker, but I would like to jam too if I can get good at it.
I started in October 2013, so I am a not-so-fresh meat.
I am a children's librarian and I love books and working with kids. I enjoy exercising, especially dancing, and I love music. I like to travel and do stuff outdoors, and I love looking for antiques and one-of-a-kind jewelry at thrift shops and flea markets.
Jamming and getting around a blocker while balancing on one skate.
Blocking my jammer when I didn't realize she was behind me.
My goal in derby is to get stronger, faster, more confident (on and off the track), and keep having fun with my teammates. I love being part of a team and skating with CVRG helps keep my stress level down. Skating always makes me happy and I want to do it as long as I can.
Big breakfast and large coffee.
I have a roller skate charm that I bought when I first started. I wear it all the time and people ask me about it, then I get to tell them about roller derby.
All CVRG parties are epic! My favorite parties have actually been our holiday parties.
Ripping the skin off my elbow when I fell and my elbow pad slid off. It happened twice and then I started wearing elbow gaskets.
I would encourage them to go for it and not be afraid! I was scared to try out for a year until I finally went to practice and I loved it immediately. And don't worry if you are not able to skate well! Most people can't either when they start. Part of the awesomeness of derby is seeing your skill level rise the more time you put into skating. Plus your teammates are always there for you and it is a great support network.
Fancy won't let you down, but she WILL knock you down.
