ADVICE TO WHO IS CONSIDERING ROLLER DERBY
Bad Wolf. The first companion on the 2005 Doctor Who reboot, Rose Tyler,
was Bad Wolf. When she discovered it and told the Doctor, she said, “I
am the Bad Wolf; I create myself.” That phrase stuck with me, and “I
create myself” has become somewhat of a mantra for me. I have the power
to change myself and better myself and create exactly the person I want
to be, and derby is source of strength and support in that endeavor.
10, because why not stick with the Doctor Who reference and pick my
I saw an episode of CSI: New York that dealt with roller derby, thought
it looked awesome, and was eager to learn to play. I looked it up, and
the closest league was in Charleston and I couldn't travel, so I put the
interest on the backburner. I heard about JCRG through friends when it
was forming, but couldn't join until 2014, for various reasons.
Blocker, though I'd love to try out jamming!
I skated around my neighborhood when I was a kid, but never got very
good. I started skating with JCRG in June 2014.
I attend school full-time, majoring in nursing; I work
part- to full-time hours at a daycare center; I play horn for a local
church; I do general hobby-type things like knitting, writing, reading,
and watching movies and TV.
Is it too cheesy to say that all of it is my proudest and favorite? I
love skating, and learning new skills makes me giddy. The first time I
manage a skill is a fantastic feeling, and then knowing that with each
practice I am continuing to improve each skill, my knowledge and
understanding of the game, my relationship with my team, and ultimately
myself and my well-being, makes me incredibly proud of not only myself
but of the whole team.
Uh. Probably the little single-serve container of peanut butter.
I want to pass my skills test and bout!
I'm quite weird, which is definitely no secret. Something people may not
know about me... I collect tea mugs and nail polish.
Roller derby is so much more than just a sport – it's a sisterhood, a
community. I have never been anywhere else that felt so welcoming,
accepting, and uplifting from the off. Derby is about supporting and
bettering yourself and your teammates, both physically and emotionally,
through love, community, and kicking ass. Join a league – you absolutely
will not be disappointed.
